The Motofino Electric MF5E-13 Scooter
Why would I want one? In order to get longer distances between charges we designed the speed controllers to be miserly on battery current consumption and sacrificed maximum speed to acheive the best balance and usefulness. Sure we can make one that will do 60, but what use is it practically if it will only go 5 miles? Instead we've built a machine with gobs of utility, which will run 22 to 30 miles and hour, for 30 miles. Further, too, if you drive slower and don't climb the hills too much. It depends on terrian and your weight mostly for best speed and range. For an awful lot of people this electrical scooter is a real winner. No maintenance chores either, except keep the tires inflated, and plug in the charger! No oil changes! No safety hazards from gasoline! Just freedom to get where you're going comfortably! For motor scooter riders the transition from a gas scooter to an electric one is a little strange. You still have the aggressive start offs, but the silence is deafening! All you hear is a gentle whirring noise! After about 377 battery re-charges you may need to replace the main Motofino 48 volt battery. Batteries are priced at about $150.00. So, if you figure 377 x 30, you have 11,310 miles per battery!
Guess what? If you had a gas scooter that got say 75 MPG, you would use 150.8 gallons of gas to drive the same distance. At $3.00 per gallon, you would have spent $452.00 to drive the same distance! The battery is 3 times less expensive, and that does not consider the oil changes and other mantenance you didn't have to do, make, or pay for! $929.00

Driving differences in a Motofino Electric compared to a Gasoline Motor Scooter
Driving the Electric is a study in conservation of battery power instead of looking for gas stations. Your Motofino came with a Battery Charger you can use to re-charge the scooter at night.
When under-way -
While driving watch the battery power meter. You will notice the needle sometimes swings into the yellow as you climb a steep grade or a hill, or at least dips a little in the green, depending on the battery's charge state.
Also note, that as you release the throttle back from wide open, your forward speed may not decrease!
Applying the hand brakes will interrupt the controller cycle and allow you to home in on a new, slower forward throttle setting/speed. You only have to squeeze the handbrakes momentarily, or quickly to get this to happen. So, if you hit the brakes in a panic stop, or otherwise, the electric motor dis-engages instantly.

This is a good time to check out the switches and lamps. First turn on the CB & Battery switch. Note this switch is also a circuit breaker that protects against short conditions. Push the blue switch to on. Now test the horn. Turn the headlight on. Check the Hi-Lo beam switch. Now grasp the hand brakes and squeeze them on at a time. Check that the stop lights come on. Push the Turn signal switch both left and right. Make sure the turn signal lamps flash on either side of the scooter. To release a TS, just center and press the switch. Remember, other drivers are confused if you lights don't work. Very dangerous. When the main battery is fully charged, the battery level meter reads into the "H" region. It will drop to high green band after a little while, but this is what you'll see after a fresh charging. Unpack the charger unit as shown on left. Inside is an instruction sheet . Read that to know how to connect and disconnect it. That little sheet will also explain how to read the automatic LED lights on the charger and what they mean. The charger is completely automatic, but pay attention what to plug in, and when. The LED lamps will tell you when the charge is finished. It is a very good idea to re-charge as soon as possible to insure long battery life. Depending on the charge state, and condition of battery it can take up to 8 to 9 hours to re-charge the main battery. Although not part of the set-up... It may be good to mention how to remove the main 48 volt battery, just for information. The picture above at the right shows where the battery removal handles are located. The handles lift up so you can grab them . (1) The first thing you do is be sure to open the trunk and throw the Main Power Circuit Breaker to "OFF." (2) Remove, or lift up the floor mat. (3) Make sure the scooter is on its center stand. Remove the key from the ignition and insert it in the battery lock key slot, at the back of the floorboard on the right side of the scooter as pictured. (4) Once the battery holding lock is un-locked with the key, grasp the recessed battery removal handles and lift the battery out. (Note) If floorboard debris, sand, dirt, has worked its way down into the battery well sides, it may not be possible to remove the battery, In that case, simply spray a liberal amount of WD-40, or silicon spray into the crack in the floorboard perimeter of the battery well. This will free it so you can remove it. A good idea is to squirt some on the battery lock mechanism too! (5) Lift out the battery with both hands, straight up. The battery is heavy, and will be a little difficult to lift. You may want to buy an extra main battery, and charge it fully. This way you can quickly be going again without waiting for 8 hours for the battery to re-charge. Note that Motofino Electrics hold a charge a long time! Depending on terrain, rider weight, and headwinds, you should be able to go thirty miles or more before re-charging the battery.
Finishing initial Set-Up...
The next item is to set the brake tension, for both the front and rear brakes so the brake handles on the handlebars engage correctly when squeezed. The right hand brake is for the front brake, while the left one controls the rear brake. Their are de-tent twist nuts on each brake set, front and rear.
The best way to set the brake adjusters, is to jack the wheel up, out of contact with the ground, then spin the wheel to see if it dragging on the brake. Usually, you will have to turn in the dentent nut 2 or more turns clockwise, or until you notice a wheel dragging. When it starts to drag, back the adjuster out counterclockwise until the wheel spins freely again. Check the setting with the hand brake grip, to see than if it does brake the wheel. Perform adjustment for the rear wheel next. While setting the brakes, look to see all the cable ties are in place securing the brake control cables. You want to see that nothing rubs the wheel. Equally critical is to check the tightness of the wheel axle nuts. Be sure these are secure. By the way, the wheels are an aluminum alloy and will polish up beautifully. They have 10" rims, and the bearings present no drag. The easier a wheel turns the better for any Electric scooter!
